Ask a lab-grade vendor what a measurement chain costs and the answer is usually a quote form. Here is the real arithmetic, from our own purchasing and from published prices.

The conventional chain, per channel

A measurement capsule runs 550 to 2,500 euro depending on grade and frequency range. Add a preamplifier (typically around 1,500 euro) and an analog-to-digital converter (500 to 1,500 euro for 1 to 2 channels) and a usable channel lands between 2,000 and 3,500 euro. Want 80 kHz capability? Quarter-inch high-frequency capsules alone start around 1,300 euro.

Where it escalates

Arrays are where the cost rises. A 4-channel IEPE acquisition module costs about 3,570 euro before microphones. A synchronized 14 to 16 channel front-end runs 15,000 euro and up, and premium Ethernet-based systems land far higher. Synchronization is the expensive part, and it is exactly what multi-microphone work needs.

The digital alternative

A digital measurement microphone with built-in ADC removes the preamp and converter entirely. The RESONIKS MPK801 Single-Channel Development Kit costs 995 euro at launch, connects over Ethernet, and ships pre-calibrated with on-sensor calibration data for automatic compensation. Arrays run on an Ethernet switch today, and the ARK141 Sensor Hub adds synchronization within 100 ns for 14 channels per hub.

The honest caveats

If your workflow requires IEC 61672 Class 1 certification, stop here because the certified analog path is still the answer. For everyone else – R&D, evaluation, ML pipelines and multi-channel work, the economics have changed.
